We are architects for a better future.

We design buildings and urban strategies as sustainable steps toward making healthy, equitable, and vibrant places.

Our approach is focused on how buildings and places change, and we ensure people are at the centre of this process through engagement + research.

Agenda

Six main agendas influence our work:

Agenda 1: Adapt + Reuse

Rather than demolishing existing structures, Incremental Urbanism promotes the adaptive reuse of buildings and materials. It is the shortcut to lowering emissions and building within our planetary boundaries. This approach preserves cultural heritage, reduces waste, and results in more diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods.

Agenda 2: Community Planning, Design + Build

Encouraging local communities to actively participate in the planning, design, and implementation of projects fosters a sense of ownership and ensures that developments meet the needs and aspirations of residents. We do this through supporting participatory planning, community ownership, and collective builds.

Agenda 3: .ınfill

Infill development is the process of filling in the gaps between existing buildings rather than expanding outward into undeveloped areas. Infill promotes mixed neighbourhoods, revitalising communities, and contributing to sustainability by reducing urban sprawl. Our approach to infill creates compact, efficient, and vibrant growth while making more efficient use of resources to create places people want to live.

Agenda 4: Testing + Tactical Urbanism

Instead of taking a long time to implement changes, where the impact is theoretical, we implement low-cost, temporary interventions aimed at quickly improving the functionality and livability of urban spaces. These interventions allow for experimentation, testing, and learning before committing to permanent changes.

Agenda 5: Mixed Neighbourhoods

Creating mixed-use neighbourhoods where residential, commercial, and recreational activities are integrated can enhance walkability, reduce reliance on cars, and promote social interaction. Incremental Urbanism encourages the gradual transformation of single-use zones into mixed-use areas. One key aspect of this is the provision of alternative housing models from affordable to intergenerational.

“[Incremental Urbanism] has developed original practical and deliverable solutions to challenges we face as a community and pushed us to aspire and prioritise areas we hadn’t before.”

Agenda 6: High Streets + Civic Spaces

Incremental urbanism focuses on making high streets and common spaces more distinctive, inviting and accessible. Our research and strategies address the big challenges we face around how our common spaces will be used in the future, while also identifying targeted improvements specific to the place such as adding seating, greenery, lighting, and programming events to encourage community engagement and foster a sense of belonging.
